How I Easily Added Floor To Ceiling Battens For A Cottagecore Aesthetic

I love adding subtle texture to the walls in our home and decided adding floor to ceiling battens in my girls bathroom was a must.

At the same time that I renovated Kelsey’s room, I decided to take on the bathroom after I decided to do a cool picture frame moulding design on her wall.

I loved the picture frame moulding accent we did in Kelsey’s room.

I knew I wanted to keep the design simple, but I also wanted to add a subtle design to the wall.

Instead of doing just an accent wall I opted to do floor to ceiling battens all the way around the bathroom.

I used pretty much the same tools that I used in my friend Jessica’s board and batten dining room, the only difference was the materials that I used and the fact that the battens went floor to ceiling.

I did the board and batten only 3/4 of the way up Jessica’s dining room wall.

I wanted to keep the material thin enough to sit on top of the baseboard without needing to do any fancy cuts, which led me to white lattice moulding from Home Depot.

The process for installing the floor to ceiling battens

The tricky part about this material is that since it’s PVC and not wood, when I used my nail gun, I had to adjust the pressure so the nail wouldn’t shoot straight through.

Installing the lattice around the ceiling gave a solid foundation for the floor to ceiling battens.
** Remember, I don’t advocate for liquid nails unless you passionate you either 1) Know how to do drywall repair or 2) You’ll NEVER take this design down.

Since the baseboard would be my bottom straight line, I needed to have a straight line for my ceiling because as I said when I did my primary bedroom, not all corners are a perfect 90 degrees.

I installed the ceiling piece first all around the bathroom to give a solid straight line to work with for the floor to ceiling battens.

Once that was installed I figured out my spacing so as to avoid any tricky cuts when it came to the bathtub surround and outlets and adjusted accordingly.

Using a scrap piece of moulding I made my spacer piece and clearly marked it so it wouldn’t get lost.

Using a scrap piece of the lattice moulding from the ceiling installation, I cut a spacer piece I used to help me evenly space the battens around the room.

Probably the most tedious part of the project was caulking around all the lattice and filling all the holes.

Caulking around every nook and cranny took a lot of time, but prep is key to any project.

After that was all done and dried, I painted a couple coats of BEHRS Whisper White in Marquee Satin, also painting the ceiling.

I also needed to do several coats of paint to cover the builder grade paint, but Whisper White by BEHR was the perfect color.

Cottagecore Decor Touches

I fell in love with the tile we selected when we built the house and chose a coordinating cabinet in gray.

We did ask the builder to not install the builder grade mirrors, but instead bought these mirrors from Target instead, which add easy accessible storage for my girls.

Instead of buying wall art, I actually shopped my own house and was able to find some great pieces, especially after I redid Kennedy’s room.

I shopped our home for a lot of the decor.

I did buy the girls this really cool automatic soap dispenser because I felt like it matched the cottagecore vibe so much better.

The last piece of the puzzle was adding a curved shower curtain rod to give the girls more room in their shower and raise it up more to make the room feel taller.

I fell in love with these actual curtains with back tabs for the shower curtain and selected the 84″ length because I didn’t want to cover the window.

I used clear plastic shower rings to attach the shower liner to the back of the curtains and it works perfectly using one ring to connect the two curtain panels together.

Now the space feels more put together and mature

I love the cottagecore vibe this bathroom has and how well everything coordinates in the space.

I’m so glad that I decided to carry the floor to ceiling battens around the entire room instead of adding it to just one wall.

By changing the throw rugs and hand towels I can add different pops of colors for each season to make the bathroom feel cozy.
