My 7 step plan for organizing my garage gym and workshop
It’s finally time to unleash my 7 step plan for organizing my garage gym and workshop, once and for all!!
Also, I wanted to join in the fall edition of the One Room Challenge and figured this would be the best way to hold me accountable and FINALLY get this space complete.
You can check out my last One Room Challenge space I completed this past Spring, my daughter Kennedy’s modern boho bedroom makeover.
Never mind the fact that I’m just now showing up in Week 3 of the ORC, but truly I’ve been working on this space for the last 3 years.
As with any project, I find that I work better when I have a list to work from so I stay focused, what about you?

If you know me, you know I’m a fool for organizing projects.
I’ve gotten a head start on this project a few years ago when I added my Wall Control System for my tools.
I’ve also painted my garage floors before, but I’m pretty sure I can do a better job this go round.
7 Steps plan to organize my garage gym and workshop
1-PURGE
If you’ve followed along before, the number one thing you have to do in any space or project is to purge out the things that either:
- Doesn’t work in the space anymore (and probably hasn’t for a long time)
- Won’t work in the future space
- Things that are broken or you don’t have time to fix
- Items you haven’t used in a long time. (This one is a hard one I get it.)
I also use the purge phase to make what I like to call “seed money” that will also help bring down the cost of the overall renovation.
2-CONTAIN
You can’t move to this next step until you’ve done the first step, purge.
Read that sentence again: YOU CAN’T MOVE TO CONTAINING YOUR STUFF UNTIL YOU’VE FINISHED PURGING.
Sorry for yelling, but this is the number one mistake I see people make, they buy all these cute containers and then they don’t work or they’re not needed.
I also know this because I have made that very mistake in this space several times, don’t be like me.
Until you truly know what will be in the space, will you know what you need to get, if anything at all, to keep items contained.
Since I’m dealing with two distinct spaces, I wanted to set everything up into zones.
Zones would not only help define spaces, but also give our family a fighting chance to staying organized.
I don’t do well with a bunch of clutter so containing things helps to visually keep me sane.
3-LABEL
Once everything is in it’s “proper space” and contained, labeling goes a long way.
I’ve found people are less likely to rip through your stuff and pull everything out if they can clearly see what’s actually inside.
I know I’m not the only one using the gym or the workshop from time to time and I want to make it easier for everyone to function.
4-IMPROVE HEATING AND COOLING
Having the gym and the workshop in the garage makes it really hard if everyone is uncomfortable.
My plan is to add additional insulation to the garage doors, block out and cracks or open spaces (which will also help with bugs), and add fan’s/ heaters.
If the space is more comfortable people will be more likely to use it, especially the gym space.
5-PAINT
This will be the biggest transformation in the garage gym and workshop.
I want to paint not only the walls and the ceilings, but especially the flooring.
We, well I, had an incident a few years ago and battery acid spilled on the floor of the garage.
And to be honest, garage floors are an ick for me, especially if I’m going to be laying on the floor doing any sort of exercise.
Plus I feel like painting will help to make the space feel fresh and I have some cool things up my sleeve.
6-LIGHTING
The builder grade lighting installed in the garage isn’t working for us anymore.
Especially with what I have planned with the painting, we’re going to need the gym and workshop to have adequate lighting.
I even have something that may help with the heating and cooling situation I mentioned earlier.
7-DECOR
Last, but certainly not least, even though it’s a garage space, I truly feel like we need to add a little bit of decor.
A larger TV is a need not only for entertainment when working out, but also since I have a feeling when I’m done, our garage is going to serve as another hang out spot.
I also want to add some motivational signs and such to the workout portion of the garage.
So where am I in my 7 step plan to for organizing my garage gym and workshop?
Like I said earlier, I’ve technically been working on this space for the last 3 years, stuck on the first three steps of purging, containing, labeling. Rinse and repeat.
Each time I thought I had the space figured out, I would find another way that made WAY more sense.
Like separating my workshop from the garage gym instead of shoving it all in the 3rd car garage.
While the goal was (and still is) to be able to park cars in this space more often, my projects were spilling over to the other space to give room for the gym area.
I also decided that I was sick of keeping a ton of stuff, which means I’ve gone through SEVERAL rounds of purging.
Follow along for weekly updates on my garage gym and workshop revamp!
Next week I’ll show you the first three steps and exactly what I’ve done and why I’m doing it this way.
This is definitely one of those “trust the process” projects and to be honest, I’m just ready to be done – DONE with it and move on. 😉
But I FINALLY feel like we’re at the perfect point and I can’t wait to see this garage gym and workshop finally complete.
